What Is a DMX Cable?

Why Does DMX512 Use 5-Pin XLR?

This is one reason a professional 5-pin DMX cable may contain more conductors than are required for only the primary DMX data pair.
Can You Use an XLR Microphone Cable for DMX?
This is one of the most common questions surrounding DMX cabling. A 3-pin microphone cable may physically connect to equipment that uses 3-pin XLR DMX connections, but that does not make it the ideal cable for DMX data transmission.
Microphone cables are designed primarily for analog audio. DMX cables are designed for digital data transmission and should have the electrical characteristics appropriate for DMX communication.
How Long Can a DMX Cable Be?
DMX was designed to operate across substantial cable distances, but successful performance depends on the entire system. Cable construction, connectors, fixture count, termination, installation environment and equipment can all affect reliability.
For shorter stage and rack connections, a few feet may be all that is needed. Larger theaters, venues and production systems may require DMX runs of 50, 100, 150 feet or more.
Using properly constructed DMX data cable becomes increasingly important as cable length and system complexity increase.
Does a DMX Line Need a Terminator?
A DMX terminator is installed at the end of a DMX chain to help prevent signal reflections that can interfere with reliable data communication. Termination can be particularly important on longer or more complex DMX networks.
If a lighting system experiences intermittent fixture behavior, flickering, unexpected control changes or other communication problems, cabling and proper termination should be part of the troubleshooting process.
