Modern video productions often need more than one connection running to the same camera, stage position or equipment location.
You may need several SDI video feeds. Or you may need SDI video plus Ethernet for camera control, networking or other production functions.
That creates an important cable-planning decision:
Should you use a multi-channel SDI snake or a hybrid camera snake that combines SDI and CAT6?
Both can reduce cable clutter and make deployment easier, but they solve different problems.
This guide explains the difference and how to choose the right configuration for your production.
WHAT IS AN SDI SNAKE CABLE?
An SDI snake cable bundles multiple independent coaxial video cables into one organized assembly.
For example, a 5-channel SDI snake provides five separate 75-ohm coaxial signal paths.
↓
ONE ORGANIZED MULTI-CHANNEL SNAKE
Each channel remains electrically independent. The snake simply keeps the cables together and makes them easier to deploy and manage.
SDI snakes are especially useful when several video signals need to travel between the same two locations.
WHAT IS A HYBRID CAMERA SNAKE?
A hybrid camera snake takes the same organizational concept but combines different cable types within the assembly.
Instead of carrying only coaxial video channels, a hybrid assembly might contain:
↓
ONE HYBRID PRODUCTION SNAKE
This lets video and network/control connections follow the same physical route while remaining separate circuits inside the assembly.
SDI SNAKE VS HYBRID CAMERA SNAKE
| Feature | SDI Snake | Hybrid Camera Snake |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Purpose | Multiple video paths | Video plus network/control paths |
| Cable Types | Multiple 75Ω coax channels | Combination of coax and CAT6 |
| Typical Connectors | BNC | BNC plus RJ45 or EtherCON |
| Best For | Multiple SDI feeds sharing one route | Camera positions requiring video and data |
| Common Applications | Fly packs, routers, switchers, production racks | PTZ systems, camera positions, live production |
WHEN TO CHOOSE AN SDI SNAKE
Choose an SDI snake when the primary requirement is moving several video signals between the same locations.
Examples include:
- Multiple cameras feeding a production switcher
- Several switcher outputs feeding monitors or processors
- Production rack connections
- Video router I/O
- Program, preview and auxiliary feeds
- Return video
- Backup SDI paths
If all of the required connections are SDI, adding CAT6 channels may provide little benefit.
A dedicated multi-channel SDI assembly keeps the design focused on the actual signal requirement.
WHEN A HYBRID CAMERA SNAKE MAKES MORE SENSE
A hybrid snake becomes especially useful when the same equipment location needs both professional video and Ethernet.
Consider a camera position requiring:
- SDI video output
- SDI return video
- Camera control
- Network connectivity
Instead of deploying separate video and network cable runs, a hybrid assembly can keep those connections together.
2 × 12G-SDI BNC channels
2 × CAT6 network channels
This type of configuration can be particularly useful in portable and repeatedly deployed systems.
HYBRID SNAKES FOR PTZ CAMERA SYSTEMS
PTZ camera systems are a strong example of why hybrid cabling can be useful.
A PTZ installation may require a professional SDI video connection while also using Ethernet for camera control or network communication.
When several of those connections follow the same physical route, bundling them into one assembly can simplify installation.
This can be useful in:
- Houses of worship
- Corporate meeting spaces
- Education facilities
- Government chambers
- Broadcast studios
- Live-event venues
12G-SDI AND CAT6 SERVE DIFFERENT PURPOSES
It is important to remember that placing SDI and CAT6 inside the same snake does not combine their functions.
The coaxial channels remain dedicated 75-ohm video paths.
The CAT6 channels remain twisted-pair network connections.
The advantage is physical organization—not conversion between the two signal types.
For UHD video applications, the coaxial portion of the assembly should be selected for the required 12G-SDI performance and transmission distance.
AV-Cables offers professional 12G-SDI BNC cable assemblies for UHD video systems.
RJ45 OR ETHERCON FOR THE NETWORK CHANNEL?
The network portion of a hybrid assembly may terminate with standard RJ45 connectors or ruggedized EtherCON-style connections depending on the equipment and application.
Standard RJ45 can be appropriate when connecting directly to conventional network ports inside protected equipment environments.
For portable production environments where the connection is frequently handled, a ruggedized interface may provide additional mechanical protection where compatible equipment is used.
AV-Cables also offers dedicated CAT6 and EtherCON production cables for professional network applications.
BREAKOUT LENGTH BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT
Hybrid assemblies often connect to equipment with ports located in different positions.
The BNC connection may be on one side of the device while the Ethernet port is somewhere else.
The breakout length needs to allow each cable leg to reach its destination without placing excessive strain on the connectors.
Before specifying the assembly, consider:
- Where the main snake trunk will terminate
- Distance between the BNC and Ethernet ports
- Rack or camera mounting configuration
- Required strain relief
- Whether the equipment position changes between productions
DON'T FORGET FUTURE EXPANSION
A cable assembly may remain in service much longer than the equipment originally connected to it.
If a production currently requires two SDI channels and one Ethernet connection, consider whether another network or video path could be useful later.
Adding a reasonable amount of spare capacity during the original build may be easier than installing another long cable run later.
At the same time, unnecessary channels add size, weight and cost.
The goal is not to maximize channel count. It is to provide enough capacity for the production without creating an unnecessarily large assembly.
CUSTOM STAGGERED BREAKOUTS
Not every device has its connections grouped together.
In racks and production systems, individual connections may need to terminate at different heights or equipment positions.
A custom staggered breakout can help individual cable legs reach their destinations without leaving large loops of excess cable around the rack.
Staggered breakouts are especially useful when a snake feeds several devices located at different positions.
WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Choose an SDI snake when:
- You primarily need multiple video feeds
- All signals travel between the same two locations
- You want organized multi-channel BNC connectivity
- You need spare SDI paths for production flexibility
Choose a hybrid camera snake when:
- You need SDI video and Ethernet at the same location
- You are building camera or PTZ positions
- You want fewer separate cable runs
- Your production equipment needs both BNC and network connectivity
THE BOTTOM LINE
An SDI snake and a hybrid camera snake may look similar from the outside, but they are designed around different connectivity requirements.
If the production needs several professional video paths, a multi-channel SDI snake provides an organized solution.
If the same location requires both video and network connections, a hybrid SDI + CAT6 snake can reduce the number of separate cable assemblies that need to be deployed.
Start by mapping the signals required at each end. Then choose the channel count, coax construction, network connections, overall length and breakout configuration around the actual production system.
