Standard BNC connectors have been used in professional video systems for decades. But as broadcast equipment has become smaller and connection counts have increased, another connector has become increasingly common: HD-BNC.

Both connectors can be used for professional 75-ohm SDI video, but they are physically very different and are often used in different types of equipment.

So what is the difference between HD-BNC and standard BNC—and when should you use each one?

WHAT IS A STANDARD BNC CONNECTOR?

The BNC connector is one of the most recognizable connectors in professional broadcast video.

Its bayonet-style locking mechanism provides a secure connection while still allowing cables to be connected and disconnected quickly.

Professional SDI systems typically use 75-ohm BNC connectors designed specifically for digital video.

Standard BNC provides plenty of connector area for technicians to connect and disconnect cables, making it an excellent general-purpose broadcast connector.

HD-BNC

Best known for: High connector density.

HD-BNC provides professional 75-ohm connectivity in a much smaller footprint, allowing considerably more video connections to fit onto equipment panels.

WHY HIGH-DENSITY CONNECTORS MATTER

Imagine a professional video router with dozens—or even hundreds—of SDI connections.

Using traditional BNC connectors requires substantial rear-panel space.

As broadcast equipment becomes more compact, manufacturers need ways to increase the number of connections without dramatically increasing equipment size.

HD-BNC helps solve that problem.

WHICH CONNECTOR SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

In most cases, your equipment determines the connector you need.

CHOOSE STANDARD BNC WHEN:

  • Your equipment uses standard BNC connections
  • Connector density isn't a major concern
  • You want a familiar, rugged broadcast connection
  • The cables will frequently be connected and disconnected

USE HD-BNC WHEN:

  • Your equipment has HD-BNC connections
  • You're working with high-density routers or switchers
  • Rack space and connector density are important
  • You need to connect HD-BNC equipment directly to standard BNC equipment

DON'T FORGET THE COAXIAL CABLE

Choosing the correct connector is only part of building a reliable SDI signal path.

You also need to select the appropriate coaxial cable for the signal format, transmission distance and installation.

Mini RG59 can be an excellent choice for high-density equipment racks and short equipment interconnects, while larger RG59 or RG6 designs may be appropriate when longer transmission distances are required.
